TRAVEL JOURNAL:
Day 44: Grande Bassam, Cote d'Ivoire

This "grand" little resort town 20 minutes outside of Abidjan has not been "grand" for quite some time. Originally chosen by the French as the capital of the Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Bassam was later evacuated due to a 6 year long yellow fever epidemic. Bingerville was chosen as the new capital of this country (later replaced by Yamoussoukro, and Bassam (as the locals call it) was downgraded to the status of resort town.

Ah, but what a resort it is! A bevy of French beach resorts fill the shore of this portion of the Atlantic and local eateries (called maquis) dot the landscape. Our travel takes us to an art collective near Bassam where we find batiks by Issoufou Ouedraogo.

Small Batiks are 17-19" tall by 13-16" wide. $20 each or $35 for the set.

Medium Batiks are 26-28" high by 36-38" wide. $60 each.
