Batik is made from standard cotton (usually white to start). The image is drawn in charcoal. The amazing colors come from a series of dye baths. With each dipping, the cotton assumes the color of the bath. Prior to each bath, the artist covers certain areas of the batik with wax or some other substance. This prevents that particular piece of cloth from being dyed. By covering and uncovering specific areas for each bath, the artist can creat solid or mixed colors.
